ICMI Study 27 Discussion Document

ADDENDUM TO THE ICMI Study 27 DISCUSSION DOCUMENT

This addendum should be read in conjunction with the full Discussion Document, which is included below, and available here: https://icmistudy27.sciencesconf.org
The International Program Committee (IPC) for ICMI 27 Study invites submissions from those working on issues in mathematics education that span social (including political) and
ecological (environmental) problems, and related ethical concerns.

The nature of this relatively new, but growing area of mathematics education, and of an ICMI Study itself, requires diverse voices, experiences, and knowledges, produced in collaborations involving researchers, teachers, teacher educators, policy makers, and other stakeholders from diverse contexts and sites of education. The IPC is committed to creating a range of opportunities for contribution and participation, as listed below, that will give visibility to the diversity of current work relevant to the topic towards building knowledge on the topic. We thus invite interested colleagues to submit papers for consideration for the Study, even if they may not be able to, as yet, commit to attending the Study Conference in January 2025, e.g., for financial reasons.

Our commitment to inclusivity, includes:
•    Considering empirical and theoretical papers of up to 8-pages. We want to emphasize the Study welcomes shorter papers also, including work in progress/development contributions, that respond to the themes and subthemes of (A) Aims of mathematics education; (B) Scales of mathematics education; (C) Resources of and for mathematics education; and (D) Mathematics education futures. Deadline June 15, 2024.
•    Considering papers first written in a language of the authors’ choice, where what is submitted is subsequently translated into English by the author using a reliable online tool (i.e., the review and revision process will be supportive, in relation to written English).
•    Offering pre-submission support for paper development and writing. Deadline May 30, 2024.
•    Giving visibility to all ideas /accepted contributions in the Study Conference Proceedings (published online, with an ISBN).
•    Hosting the Study Conference - a key forum for analyzing and moving the field forward in the Study Volume - in a developing, lower-middle income country, thus harnessing local and regional knowledges.
•    Creating a Solidarity Fund to support participation in the Conference.
•    Considering relevant contributions in the production of the Study Volume, the nature of which will take shape during and after the Conference (with authorship centred around conference participation).
