ICMI Awards Committees

ICMI has two selection committees for the three ICMI Awards.

The ICMI Felix Klein and Hans Freudenthal Awards Committee consists of six distinguished scholars in the field of mathematics education (five members and a chair). They are appointed by the President of ICMI, after consultation with the ICMI Executive Committee and with other scholars in the field. The members of the Committee should be from five different countries and should represent at least three continents. At least two of the members should work in a a less affluent and/ or developing country (as of 2017). The Committee should also be balanced in terms of gender and age.

The active members of the Felix Klein and Hans Freudenthal Awards Committee, except for its chair, are not made known. Only at the time when the terms of committee members expire are their names made public. The term of appointment of the Felix Klein and Hans Freudenthal Awards Committee members is eight years and non-renewable, with three of the members being replaced each four years. The new Committee chair can be replaced either by one of the three remaining members or by another prominent scholar. Members of the ICMI Executive Committee are ineligible to serve simultaneously in the Felix Klein and Hans Freudenthal Awards Committee and vice-versa.

The Felix Klein and Hans Freudenthal Awards Committee is completely autonomous once appointed. Its work and records are kept internal and confidential, except for the obvious process of soliciting advice and information from the professional community, which is done at the discretion of the committee chair. The ICMI community is invited to send nominations to the Felix Klein and Hans Freudenthal Award Chair after the Call for Nominations for the Felix Klein and Hans Freudenthal Awards is announced through several channels: ICMI website, the ICMI newsletter and other means of communication.

The Felix Klein and Hans Freudenthal Awards Committee has full authority in selecting the awardees. Its decision is final and is reported, in confidence, to the ICMI EC via the President of ICMI, before announcing it to the community.

The first Felix Klein and Hans Freudenthal Awards Committee was chaired by Professor Michèle Artigue of Université Paris Diderot - Paris 7 in France and ended its term in December 2006, and was then partially renewed. The list of the members of the ICMI Felix Klein and Hans Freundenthal Awards Committee can be found below.
