The Comité Interamericano de Educación Matemática (CIAEM) / Interamerican Committee of Mathematics Education (IACMEin English) was founded in 1961 by a group of mathematicians and mathematics educators from the three Americas, led by the famous mathematician, Marshall Stone, from the United States, who was at the time the President of ICMI.
The principal objective of CIAEM was to bring together educators from throughout the Americas to evaluate and reformulate mathematics curricula in general (in the beginning, closely associated to the New Math reform), but, especially, to promote the development of the countries of Latin America.
Aims and activities:
CIAEM organizes various events (conferences, seminars, presentations, …), promotes publications (books, papers, journals, …), publishes translations, provides on-line Math Education resources, and supports national groups and associations of educators in the region.
The IACME/CIAEM Terms of Reference are the base of its activities.
Conferences
CIAEM organizes an Interamerican Conference of Mathematics Education every 4 years; usually, one year before ICME. The first was held in Bogotá, Colombia, in 1961. There, the first Executive Committee of CIAEM was created. The second Interamerican Conference on Mathematics Education was held in Lima, Peru, in 1966. These first Conferences prompted a productive movement for Mathematics Education in the Americas, despite the challenges of geography, communication, and, principally, the economy. The Conferences have been held regularly: Bahía Blanca, Argentina, 1972; Caracas, Venezuela, 1975; Campinas, Brazil, 1979; Guadalajara, Mexico, 1985; Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, 1987; Miami, USA, 1991; Santiago, Chile, 1995; Maldonado, Uruguay, 1999; Blumenau, Brazil, 2003, Querétaro, Mexico, 2007, Recife, Brazil, 2011; Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Mexico, 2015; Medellín, Colombia, 2019; Lima, Peru, 2023.
CIAEM puts an emphasis on the academic and scientific quality of the event, and on the presentation of research results and serious proposals for improving Mathematics Education.
OrganizationCIAEM is organized by
- An International Council;
- An Executive Team: President, two Vice Presidents, an Organizational Secretary, a Secretary for Technology and Regional Members-at-Large;

- The CIAEM Assembly composed of all those above and ex-Presidents;
- The CIAEM Community (virtual) composed of researchers, teachers and students that support CIAEM activities in their countries;
- CIAEM Ambassadors who promote CIAEM activities outside of the Americas.
