From the very beginning of ICMI, the journal L'Enseignement Mathématique was adopted as the official organ of the Commission.
An initial aim of L'Enseignement Mathématique, launched in 1899, was to associate the world of teaching to the great international movement of scientific solidarity that was emerging at the end of the 19th century. This idea of internationalism in mathematics education was also a key ingredient behind the founding of ICMI during the fourth Congress of Mathematicians held in Rome in 1908. This coincidence of the spirit between the newly established Commission and the journal L'Enseignement Mathématique, possibly combined with the presence of Henri Fehr (1870-1954) being active in both groups — co-founder of L'EM on the one hand, and first Secretary-General of ICMI on the other —, resulted in one of the very first decisions of the Commission being to select the journal as its official organ, which is still the case today.
Past issues of L'Enseignement Mathématique — except for the five most recent years — can be accessed freely online via the SwissDML portal (Swiss Digital Mathematics Library).
