Exceptions and counterexamples: understanding Abel’s comment on Cauchy’s Theorem

published in Historia Mathematica  (Issue 32.4, 2005)

The Montucla Prize is awarded by the Executive Committee of the International Commission for the History of Mathematics every four years to the author of the best article by a early career scholar published in Historia Mathematica in the four years preceding the International Congress of History of Science and Technology.

Historia Mathematica: International Journal of History of Mathematics is the official journal of the International Commission for the History of Mathematics. Founded by Kenneth O. May in 1974, it has published on many aspects of the history of mathematics in all periods and all cultures ever since its first appearance. It was originally published by Academic Press, and since May of 2004 by Elsevier.
