Past ICMs

The IMU supports and assists the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM).

The first ICM was held in 1897, since 1900 ICMs take place every four years. It was in 1900 at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Paris that David Hilbert presented his 23 famous problems.

Virtual ICM (2022)

The ICMs listed above have a precursor, a congress held in 1893 in Chicago (International Mathematical Congress) with a subsequent meeting in Evanston (The Evanston Colloquium). This event was held in connection with the World's Columbian Exposition Chicago 1893 and is somtimes refered to as the 0^th ICM. The corresponding proceedings can also be found here.

Guillermo P. Curbera (Universidad de Sevilla), who curated the exhibition on the history of the International Congresses at ICM 2006 in Madrid, has made parts of the exhibition electronically available.
