There are multiple ways to celebrate the International Day of Mathematics 2025 (IDM 2025) on March 14 or around. You are invited to join one of the celebrations below, or to celebrate in your country and/or in your classroom!

2025 IDM theme and celebrating in the classroom

The 2025 IDM theme is “Mathematics, Art, and Creativity”.  Moreover, a lunar eclipse will be visible during the night of March 13 to March 14.  The eclipse will be visible from more than half of the world and it will be total for most of the Americas.

The International Day of Mathematics is an opportunity to celebrate and spread the message that mathematics is beautiful and exciting.  Even a small celebration can make a real difference.  If your time to organize is limited, you can decide to make a special event in your classroom, for instance by using some of the material proposed on the website.  In particular, two new activities, one on artistic tilings and one on artistic polyhedra are related to the 2025 IDM theme.  You can also decide to use the new activity on the mathematics of eclipses.  And don’t forget to post your school on the IDM map.

UNESCO-IDM-IMU Webinar “Mathematics and Creativity in Art and Education” on March 14

This virtual IDM 2025 Webinar will take place 13:00–14:30 UTC on March 14, 2025, with the title “Mathematics and Creativity in Art and Education”.  It is organized jointly by UNESCO, IDM and IMU. Translation in French will be available.  To join, please register visiting this webpage.

The webinar will address the many ways in which art can be intertwined with mathematics and how both contribute to human creativity.  It will offer French translation.

Ingrid Daubechies will give the keynote 15-minute lecture “Mathematics helping Art Conservation”.  Videos of dancer Sadeck Berrabah, pianist Filippo Gorini, and sculptor Theo Jansen will be presented.  The webinar will also include several short 5-minute presentations by mathematicians contributing to art and by artists using mathematics.

Please help us spreading the announcement in your community and to university students.

Posting events on the 2025 map of the IDM website

The IDM 2025 map will remain open until the end of March 2025.  It is still time to post your IDM events if you haven’t done so.
