The IMU Abacus Medal is awarded for outstanding contributions in Mathematical Aspects of Information Sciences. The IMU Abacus Medal is awarded to a mathematician whose 40th birthday does not occur before January 1st of the year of the ICM at which the award is made. The award consists of a gold medal bearing the thematic motif of “the Abacus Bird of the Mathematicians” and a cash amount of EUR 10,000. The IMU Abacus Medal is funded jointly by the University of Helsinki and the Simons Foundation.
For his path-breaking research developing the theory of information complexity, a framework for using information theory to reason about communication protocols. His work has led to direct-sum theorems giving lower bounds on amortized communication, ingenious protocol compression methods, and new interactive communication protocols resilient to noise.
