Newsletter 2
International Congress of Mathematicians,
Hyderabad, India
August 19 – 27, 2010
Second Announcement
Greetings!
The Organizing Committee of the International Congress of Mathematicians to be held at Hyderabad is pleased to announce that several new items of useful information has been added to the website http://www.icm2010.org.in
If we have not anticipated some of your questions, please let us know, and we will be happy to clarify them on our web-site.
You may have noticed, on our website, that the Department of Atomic Energy and Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, have provided us with generous grants for organising the ICM. This is very much in keeping with the general policy of support to science, in particular mathematics, pursued by the government of India over the last fifty years and more. We are also happy that we are receiving substantial support from private sources and these will be duly acknowledged in our web-site.
We have added two new posters to the existing ones on our web-site. These are also being mailed to many institutions all over the world.
The pre-registration for ICM 2010 is now open. Over five hundred mathematicians have signed up by now and their names appear on our web-site. Pre-registration is simple and takes only a few minutes. If you have not already signed up, we request you to please complete the on-line pre-registration form at
http://www.icm2010.org.in/registration.php
to help us with the organization of the event.
The Chern Medal Award — a new prize in mathematics: Chern Medal Award – will be awarded jointly by the IMU and the Chern Medal Foundation (CMF), for the first time, at the opening ceremony of ICM 2010, Hyderabad, India on August 19, 2010 to an individual whose lifelong outstanding achievements in the field of mathematics warrant the highest level of recognition.
Incidentally, Chern had been offered a permanent faculty position at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, in 1949-50 when he left China; see the article “India and the world of mathematics” by M.S. Raghunathan, on the Mathematical Miscellany page of the icm2010 web-site. A second article announcing the conduct of ICM 2010 at Hyderabad, which appeared in Current Science, is also reproduced on that page. A number of similar articles would appear soon.
We will keep you posted of future developments. We assume, many of you have already made plans to take part in the ICM 2010. We assure you that we will do everything to make your stay as comfortable as possible and that the academic program and other events being planned will make the ICM 2010 a memorable event. We look forward to seeing you at Hyderabad in August 2010!
