"Math Maker" of the months May and June 2023 by DMV

DMV - German Mathematical Society

Former CWM chair Marie-Francoise Roy is awarded with the title "Math Maker" of the months May and June 2023 by DMV, the German Mathematical Society. She is known for her work and books on algorithms for real algebraic geometry. She is a member of several associations for the advancement of women in mathematical and general scientific and technical studies and careers. She is also a member of associations working for scientific development in Africa, particularly in Niger. Reasons enough to award the dedicated mathematician for her numerous activities. Her motto: „Mathematics counts because it is fascinating, surprising and requires creative minds, so many problems easy to formulate are still unsolved ...“

Ph.D. Honoris Causa for Ingrid Daubechies in Rome

May 12, 2023

CWM is happy to announce that the May 12 - Celebrating Women in Mathematics website for the 2023 edition has been launched, and is now available at may12.womeninmaths.org

May 12 is the birthday of Maryam Mirzakhani. This date was chosen to celebrate Women in Mathematics in her memory, with the goal of inspiring women everywhere in the world, celebrating their achievements in mathematics, and encouraging an open, welcoming and inclusive work environment for everybody.

In this 5th edition of the May 12 initiative, 150+ events have been registered on May 12 website. Arrangements have been made to allow free screenings of the film "Olga Alexandrovna Ladyzhenskaya”, produced and directed by Ekaterina Eremenko. This movie was first presented during the World Meeting for Women in Mathematics in 2022, and tells the story of the great woman and mathematician Olga Alexandrovna Ladyzhnskaya, whose 100th birthday was in 2022. The May 12 initiative produced subtitles of the OAL film in french, italian, persian, portuguese, spanish and turkish on top of the original subtitles in english and russian.

The May 12 initiative is supported by several organisations for women in mathematics: the European Women in Mathematics, the Association for Women in Mathematics, the African Women in Mathematics Association, the Indian Women and Mathematics, the CGD-UMALCA (Commission on Gender and Diversity of the Mathematical Union of Latin America and the Caribbean) and the Women’s Committee of the Iranian Mathematical Society. It is currently funded by CWM.

Inaugural Meeting of the Asian-Oceanian Women in Mathematics (AOWM)

ICTS
India

The AOWM was created in 2022 in order to facilitate interactions between women mathematicians in Asia and Oceania, with support from CWM. The inaugural meeting of AOWM will take place in hybrid mode from 24 to 28 April 2023, under the auspices of the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS), Bangalore, India.

Mathematics in the Southern Cone 2 - Application for 2024

Montevideo
Uruguay

Mathematics in the Southern Cone is a collaboration workshop between researchers on currently unsolved mathematical problems. The focus is on working together to make progress on current problems, rather than simply presenting results as usual. This proposal invites individuals of all genders to participate in the groups, which will be led by female researchers to encourage gender diversity in research leadership and promote the work of female researchers in the region. The workshop is one of the projects approved in CWM call 2023.

Prior to the in-person meeting in Montevideo, teams will work virtually for a semester to prepare for and enhance the in-person meeting (18 to 23 February 2024). After the in-person work in Montevideo, teams will continue to work virtually with the goal of publishing new results in specialized mathematical journals. Articles are expected to be submitted for publication in September 2024.

Teams will consist of 4 to 6 individuals of all genders, with priority given to women who are completing their doctorate or are in postdoctoral stage. The leadership will be in charge of one or two established female mathematicians.

Requirements for applying as a leader include being established as a researcher in a university in a South America country, presenting a proposal in line with the workshop's objectives, leading virtual teamwork from June 2023 to February 2024, being able to attend the workshop week in Montevideo and covering the costs of travel and accommodation, and guiding the writing of an article with the team's results for submission by September 12, 2024.

Interested leaders must complete the form until April 20, 2023.

Wolf Prize for 2023 in Mathematics awarded to Ingrid Daubechies

Wolf Foundation

Ingrid Daubechies is awarded the Wolf Prize for her work in the creation and development of wavelet theory and modern time-frequency analysis. Her discovery of smooth, compactly supported wavelets, and the development of biorthogonal wavelets transformed image and signal processing and filtering.

Beyond her scientific contributions, Professor Daubechies also advocates for equal opportunities in science and math education, particularly in developing countries. As President of the International Mathematical Union, she worked to promote this cause. She is aware of the barriers women face in these fields and works to mentor young women scientists and increase representation and opportunities for them.

Hybrid Webinar: How to evaluate and reduce the Gender Gap in Science?

The interdisciplinary and international Gender Gap in Science project ended in 2019. It is timely to reflect on its results, follow up and outcomes and to learn about alternative approaches. This hybrid webinar is the participation of the Standing Committee for Gender Equality in Science to the Global Women’s breakfast.
The event will be held in hybrid format (in-person and online) on February 14th, 2023 in Aubervilliers, (Greater Paris, France).

Participants in the webinar:
Marie-Françoise Roy (Université de Rennes): “The Gender Gap in Science project and its outcomes”
Guillaume Hollard (Ecole Polytechnique): “What interventions for more women in science? Tools, knowledge and know-how for the creation and evaluation of public policies”
Sophie Dabo (Université de Lille), Rachel Ivie (American Institute of Physics): “The global survey of scientists: focus on Africa, Latin-America, Mathematics and Physics”
Helena Mihaljevic (HTW Berlin): “New results for the gender gap in publication patterns”
