EMF – Espace Mathématique Francophone
The Espace Mathématique Francophone (EMF) was created to promote reflection and exchanges within the French-speaking world on the lively issues of mathematics teaching in our current societies, at the primary, secondary and higher education levels, as well as on issues related to the initial and in-service training of teachers. The EMF contributes to the development of a French-speaking community rich in its cultural diversity, around the teaching of mathematics at the crossroads of continents, cultures and generations. The working language of the EMF is French. EMF is recognized as an ICMI Regional Affiliate Organization.
The scientific conferences of the EMF have been held every three years since 2000 and will starting in 2025 be held every four years. They are aimed at the various stakeholders concerned with issues affecting the teaching of mathematics: mathematicians, mathematics educators, researchers, trainers, and teachers at various levels. The locations of the conferences are chosen to respect a geographical balance and to encourage the participation of the broadest possible francophone community.
The EMF conferences aim to:
EMF is executed by a Scientific Board whose primary function is to promote the realization of the EMF scientific conferences every four years in a spirit consistent with the initial vocation of these scientific conferences. The Board consists of eight members appointed for a single eight-year term. Half of the Board is renewed every four years. New members take office after the process of nominating the host country and the Scientific Committee has been completed.
The outgoing Board is responsible for proposing the list of its new members for validation by the ICMI Executive Committee. In the selection of its new members, the Board shall respect principles of balance between representatives from the South (Africa, Asia) and the North (Europe, North America) on the one hand and women and men on the other (see precise rules on EMF website)
