First woman to be the head of the mathematical sciences department of a major research university (UIC).
Known world-wide for her research in mathematical logic, recursive function theory, and theoretical computer science.
A founder member of AWM, she was "slated" to be AWM president in 1991, but died in 1989
In 1990 the AWM established the Louise Hay Award for contributions to mathematics education, to be awarded to a woman every year at the Joint Mathematics Meetings of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) and the American Mathematical Society (AMS).
