IMU Breakout Graduate Fellowship Awardees 2016

Thanks to a generous donation by the winners of the Breakthrough Prizes in Mathematics, IMU (The International Mathematical Union) with the assistance of FIMU (Friends of the IMU) and TWAS (The World Academy of Sciences) launched in April 2016 a fellowship program to support postgraduate studies, in a developing country, leading to a PhD degree in the mathematical sciences.

The selection process of the recipients of the new IMU Breakout Graduate Fellowship has concluded in November 2016 with the award of full PhD grants to three students from developing countries engaged in a PhD degree in the mathematical sciences in a developing country.

Do Thai Duong (Vietnam) received the fellowship to obtain his PhD at the Institute of Mathematics of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) where he has obtained the degree in March 2022 with a dissertation on Some problems in Pluripotential Theory. The supervisor was Professor Pham Hoang Hiep (VAST) and the co-supervisor Professor Dinh Tien Cuong (National University of Singapore). After finishing his PhD study, he works at the Institute of Mathematics of VAST.

María Alejandra Ramírez Luna

María Alejandra Ramírez Luna (Colombia) received the fellowship to obtain her PhD at the Universidad del Valle (Colombia) where she has obtained the degree in April 2022 with a dissertation on Minimal hypersurfaces in Riemannian Manifolds. The advisor was Professor Gonzalo García Camacho (U. del Valle) and the co-advisor Professor Fernando Codá Marques (Princeton University, USA). In September 2022 she will begin a postdoctoral position at University of California, Santa Cruz, USA.

Abebe Regassa Tufa

Abebe Regassa Tufa (Ethiopia) received the scholarship to obtain his PhD at the University of Botswana. He was nominated by Professor Habtu Zegeye Hailu from Botswana International University for Science and Technology. He has obtained his Ph. D. in June 2018 with a thesis on Approximating Solutions of Fixed Point, Variational Inequality and Hammerstein Type Equation Problems, developed in the Department of Mathematics of the University of Botswana, Gaborone, supervised by Prof. Habtu Zegeye Hailu and co-supervised by Dr. Mosalagae Thuto (University of Botswana). After a four years period of study in Botswana he is now back at his home University at Bahir Dar in Ethiopia where he started working as Assistant Professor.
