The Open Arms program was set by IMPA (Instituto de Matemática Pura e Aplicada) and SBM (Sociedade Brasileira de Matemática)
to stimulate the participation in the International Congress of Mathematicians: the two organizations offer 500 travel grants
for mathematicians from the developing world to attend the Congress.
The program also benefits from a contribution from IMU (International Mathematical Union), and this has just been increased,
so that Open Arms now offers a total of 635 travel grants. A significant number of these grants are reserved for women,
to encourage female participation in the Congress.
We are also happy to inform that, in response to requests from several colleagues, the Open Arms committee has extended the
application period: the deadline now is
October 15, 2017 and the results will be announced by
November 30, 2017.
Grantees will need to confirm that they accept the travel grant through completing their ICM 2018 registration by
March 27, 2018. Grants will be paid in Brazilian currency (BRL), in Rio de Janeiro during the Congress.
