People who intend to attend the second ICMI-EARCOME (East Asia Regional Conference on Mathematics Education) and the Ninth Southeast Asian Conference on Mathematics Education or SEACME 9 in Singapore, May 27-31, 2002, are encouraged to attend the Brunei Conference also.
EARCOME 2002 - SEACME 9, May 2002
The second ICMI-EARCOME (East Asia Regional Conference on Mathematics Education) is to be held in Singapore in on May 27-31, 2002. The conference is organised by an International Programme Committee and will be hosted by the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore and the Association of Mathematics Educators, Singapore. EARCOME 2002 is also be designated as the Ninth Southeast Asian Conference on Mathematics Education or SEACME 9.
EARCOME 2002 combines two conferences in two separate series of conferences in the East Asia region. The First East Asian Regional Conference on Mathematics Education (EARCOME) was held in Korea in 1998. Two earlier East Asian conferences held before EARCOME were the ICMI-China Regional Conferences on Mathematics Education, Beijing (1991) and Shanghai (1994). The SEACME series has a longer history and the conferences are held triennially, in Manila (1978), Kuala Lumpur(1981), Haad Yai (1984), Singapore (1987), Brunei (1990), Surabaya (1993), Hanoi (1996) and Manila (1999).
The theme of the conference, "Mathematics Education for a Knowledge-Based Era", will be explored through four principal areas: assessment, technology, teacher education and curriculum. It is anticipated that papers will address the conference theme, reflecting upon issues, concerns and consideration appropriate to mathematics teaching and learning at primary, secondary and post-secondary levels. We must acknowledge the extraordinary and accelerating rate of change that is occurring in our knowledge-based era. Much of this change is dominated by quantitative information and the means used to communicate this information. As educators,
How can we adjust to the requirements of new knowledge, tools, ways of doing and communicating mathematics, and so on? How do we make adjustments to include support for learners with a host of diverse needs? How can the needs of learners be addressed to meet the demands of a rapidly changing world?
Researchers, policy makers, mathematics educators and teachers are invited to share their knowledge at the first ICMI-EARCOME conference of the twenty-first century.
The three 90-minute plenary lectures will be given by Lin Fou-Lin (Taiwan) on Teacher Education, Lim-Teo Suat Khoh (Singapore) on Curriculum Development, and Simon See (Sun Microsystems) on Information Technology. There will be a 90-minute plenary symposium on assessment chaired by Wong Khoon Yong (Singapore) with Kaye Stacey (Australia), Marja van den Heuvel-Panhuizen (Holland) and Toshiakira Fuji (Japan) as invited participants.

7th COMHISMA, May 2002
The Seventh Maghrebian Symposium on the History of Arabic Mathematics (7th COMHISMA - 7e Colloque Maghrébin sur l'Histoire des Mathématiques Arabes) will be held at the École Normale Supérieure (ENS) of Marrakech, Morocco, from May 30th to June 2nd, 2002. The symposium is organised by the Groupe de Recherche en Didactique de l'Informatique et des Mathématiques (GREDIM) at the ENS and is in sequel to other symposia previously organised in the Maghreb: Algeria (1986), Tunisia (1988), Algeria (1990), Morocco (1992), Tunisia (1992) and Algeria (2000).
The COMHISMA meetings have always been a space to reinforce the interest for the history of Arabic mathematics as a fundamental phase in the general history of mathematics by considering issues such as: the discovery, the edition and translation of the important manuscripts; the enhancement of the relation between mathematics and the social and religious needs of the society; the identification of the math teaching traditions in the Arabo-Islamic civilization; the enhancement of the links between mathematics and the other domains of knowledge; the highlighting of the contribution of the Moslem west, the Maghreb and the Andalus, in the mathematical building. On the other hand, in addition to the scientific results, these meetings contribute to the awareness of the educational role of the history of mathematics. In order to reinforce this tendency, the Organizing Committee has introduced in this 7th symposium a session on the use of the history of mathematics in the teaching and learning of mathematics. This session will be devoted to issues such as the role of the history of mathematics in a pedagogical setting; the place of history of mathematics in the preparation of teachers; connections with aspects such as 'analysis of concepts' or problem solving; the relation between history of mathematics and research in didactics.
The languages of the symposium are Arabic, French and English.

WFNMC4, August 2002
The Fourth Conference of the World Federation of National Mathematics Competitions (WFNMC), an Affiliated Study Group of ICMI, is to be held in Melbourne, Australia, from 4 to 11 August 2002. WFNMC organises an international conference every four years, the previous conferences having been held in Waterloo, Canada (1990), Pravetz, Bulgaria (1994) and Zhong Shan, China (1998).
The keynote speakers include John Conway (USA), David Coulson (Australia) jointly with Alexander Soifer (USA), André and Jean-Christophe Deledicq (France), Robert Geretschläger (Austria), Petar Kenderov (Bulgaria), Andy Liu (Canada), Kaye Stacey (Australia) and Anne Street (Australia). It is expected that each speaker will talk on a topic of general mathematical or problem solving interest, with the exception that Petar Kenderov will present an overview (state of the nation) of the WFNMC.
Each participant will be asked to give a short presentation of his/her favourite problem (not necessarily of their own composition) of recent years. It is planned to have the participants receive a copy of the problems and solutions in advance so that the focus of these sessions can be on interesting aspects of the problem, such as the creation of the problem, student reaction to and performance on the problem and interesting aspects of the solutions. It is expected that there will be three parallel sessions, relating to the three competition levels: National level; Senior Inclusive (broad standard range) year 10 or higher; and Junior Inclusive up to Year 9.
There are six special topic areas (with their convenors): Geometry (Ali Rejali, Iran); Research related to competitions (Maria Falk DeLosada, Colombia); The creation of Olympiad Problems (Robert Gertschläger, Austria); Inclusive Competitions - e.g. Canadian, Australian, Kangourou - (Ron Scoins, Canada); The Involvement of Teachers in Competitions and the Role of Competitions in Mathematical Education (Tony Gardiner, UK); and Informatics (David Clark, Australia).
