Science, Technology & Mathematics Education for Human Development, February 2001
The International Conference on Science, Technology & Mathematics Education for Human Development is being organised on February 20 - 23, 2001, at Goa (India) jointly by the Commonwealth Association of Science, Technology and Mathematics Educators (CASTME) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) through its Project 2000+, in collaboration with the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), TIFR, Mumbai. The conference is also sponsored by the Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi, India, and by the Government of India (Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of Science and Technology and Department of Biotechnology).
The conference will focus on Scientific and Technological Literacy (STL) under the broad theme of the role of Science, Technology and Mathematics Education for Human Development. The Conference aims at providing a forum to educational planners, administrators, teacher educators, teachers and researchers in science, technology and mathematics education to exchange ideas on various themes focussing on the role of science, technology and mathematics education in human development. The Conference will also review achievements of the Project 2000+, a project launched in 1993 by UNESCO and International Council of Associations for Science Education (ICASE), in collaboration with Commonwealth Secretariat, Gender, Science and Technology (GASAT), International Association of Science and Technology Education (IOSTE), International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU) and World Council of Associations of Technology Education (WOCATE).
The conference will deliberate on the following issues: Curriculum reforms for human development; Assessment and examinations; Learner-centered professional staff development; Scientific and technological literacy for all, including strategies for teaching; Popularization, public understanding and life long learning; Affordable cost-effective technologies and infrastructure; Bridging the gulf between research and classroom practices; Empowerment of women; Ethics, human rights and culture of peace.
It is expected that a framework for effective implementation of policies regarding science, technology and mathematics education and Project 2000+ will emerge from the conference. A regional branch of CASTME will also be established during the conference.

The Second Conference of the European Society for Research in Mathematics Education (CERME 2) will take place from February 24 to 27, 2001, in Marianske Lazne, Czech Republic.
The chief aims of European Society for Research in Mathematics Education are to promote communication, cooperation and collaboration in research in mathematics education in Europe. This conference is designed to promote these aims by fostering a communicative spirit and by moving away from research presentations by individuals towards collaborative group work. Its main feature is to be a number of Thematic Groups whose members will work together in a common research area. There are seven groups in this conference and researchers wishing to present a paper at the conference should submit the paper to one of these groups. The European Mathematical Society (EMS) is organizing a meeting to address the question of the present and future state of mathematics education in Europe. For the past two years the EMS has been running a project named "Reference levels for age 16 in school mathematics in Europe" sponsored by the European Commission and involving eighteen European countries. The significance of this project arises from the need to have a clear picture of the trends and problems in mathematics education around age 16, given the increasing mobility of employees and of students in higher education, and from the fact that the EMS working group has sought in its study to combine factual accuracy and pedagogical sensitivity with a strong mathematical focus. The working group was also sensitive to the increasing difficulty some countries face in recruiting mathematics students.
The outcome and final report of this study will be presented and discussed in a final conference in Luxembourg on May 11 and 12, 2001.
This will be a unique opportunity for mathematics educators, mathematicians, representatives of teachers' associations, curriculum developers, school inspectors, etc. to get an up-to-date picture of developments in other European countries and to discuss details with their colleagues from other countries. The report describes the nature of existing differences up to age 16, but conscientiously avoids any suggestion that curricula should be made more uniform. Rather, it is recognised that differences can be a source of richness - provided they are deliberate and the implications are clearly understood. The project being reported differ from other recent international projects in various ways - not least in that the goal was neither to test individual students nor to rank different school systems. Energising Science, Mathematics and Technical Education for All, May 2001
The Department of Science and Mathematics Education of the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education is pleased to announce its sixth International Conference. The theme for the conference is "Energising Science, Mathematics and Technical Education for All", and it will be held from May 21 to May 24, 2001. Third Southern Hemisphere Symposium on Undergraduate Mathematics Teaching, July 2001
As a follow-up of the first two DELTA conferences, in Brisbane in 1997 and Laguna Quays in 1999 (Australia), the Third Southern Hemisphere Symposium on Undergraduate Mathematics Teaching will take place July 1-5, 2001, in the natural surroundings of the Berg-en-Dal camp in the Kruger National Park in South Africa.
The theme of the conference is "Gearing for flexibility" and the topics are: (1) Teaching web-based courses, (2) Multi-skilling, (3) Flexibility in learning and teaching styles, (4) Flexibility in entry level standards, (5) Adapting curricula to answer to demands of society, (6) Distance learning and (7) Flexible assessment. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of PME, following the PME 25 conference in Utrecht, the Freudenthal Institute will organize a summer institute on 18-20 July 2001. The topic of the Pme 25 Summer Institute (PSI) will be the theory and practice of Realistic Mathematics Education (RME). Plenary sessions and workshops will provide participants with theoretical and practical background information on RME; hands-on workshops are intended to deepen their understanding of RME. Various topics will be addressed, such as: the teaching and learning of algebra; number and geometry; assessment; the use of technology; the role of practice. Presenters will base their contributions and draw their examples from the work that they did in various projects the Freudenthal Institute has been involved in, ranging from elementary through secondary education.

The Fifth International Conference on Technology in Mathematics Teaching (ICTMT 5) will be held at the University of Klagenfurt, Austria, on August 6-9, 2001. This conference is in sequel to other held at Birmingham (1993), Edinburgh (1995), Koblenz (1997) and Plymouth (1999). The ICTMT conferences aim at bringing together classroom practitioners, curriculum designers, mathematics education researchers and educational software designers, all of them sharing an interest to improve the quality of teaching and learning by effective use of technology. The level of education comprises schools, colleges, and universities. Subjects of interest are: mathematics; related subjects using mathematical models; applications of mathematics in industry and commerce.

The Mathematics Education into the 21st Century Project, in cooperation with the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers, the Third World Forum and the Hong Kong Institute of Education, announces an international conference on the theme "New Ideas in Mathematics Education" to be held in Palm Cove, Tropical North Queensland, Australia, August 19-24, 2001. This conference is in sequel to two conferences organized by the Project in Egypt (November 1999) and in Jordan (November 2000).
Plenary speakers include : Gail Burrill, (USA), Doug Clarke (Australia), Rudiger Vernay & Regina Puscher (Germany), Roberto Baldino (Brazil) and Hanan Innabi (Jordan). Symposium on Elementary Mathematics Teaching, August 2001

CASTME Europe Conference, April 2002
The Commonwealth Association of Science, Technology and Mathematics Educators (CASTME) announces a conference on the theme "Linking Science, Mathematics and Technology Education, and their Social Relevance", to be held in Malta from April 11 to 14, 2002.
The conference seeks to explore links between science, mathematics and the technologies within formal and non-formal educational opportunities, and across the stages of education. Science, mathematics and technology are often taught in isolation and the skills and knowledge of one area are rarely applied to the other subjects. Yet many concepts are common to all these subjects. The conference will highlight the social context and social relevance of these subjects, and explore the potential of involving out of school sites for learning within local communities.

The second ICMI-EARCOME (East Asia Regional Conference on Mathematics Education) is to be held in Singapore in on May 27-31, 2002. The conference is organised by an International Programme Committee and will be hosted by the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore and the Association of Mathematics Educators, Singapore. EARCOME 2002 is also be designated as the Ninth Southeast Asian Conference on Mathematics Education or SEACME 9.
EARCOME 2002 combines two conferences in two separate series of conferences in the East Asia region. The First East Asian Regional Conference on Mathematics Education (EARCOME) was held in Korea in 1998. Two earlier East Asian conferences held before EARCOME were the ICMI-China Regional Conferences on Mathematics Education, Beijing (1991) and Shanghai (1994). The SEACME series has a longer history and the conferences are held triennially, in Manila (1978), Kuala Lumpur(1981), Haad Yai (1984), Singapore (1987), Brunei (1990), Surabaya (1993), Hanoi (1996) and Manila (1999).
The theme of the conference, "Mathematics Education for a Knowledge-Based Era", will be explored through four principal areas: assessment, technology, teacher education and curriculum.

The International Association for Statistical Education (IASE) and the International Statistical Institute (ISI) are organizing the Sixth International Conference on Teaching Statistics (ICOTS-6) which will be hosted by the South African Statistical Association (SASA) at the International Convention Centre in Durban, South Africa, from July 7-12, 2002.
The major aim of ICOTS-6 is to provide the opportunity for people from around the world who are involved in statistics education to exchange ideas and experiences, to discuss the latest development in teaching statistics and to expand their network of statistical educators. World Conference on Science Education, April 2003
The International Council of Associations for Science Education (ICASE) announces that the 2003 World Conference on Science Education will be held in Mar del Plata, Argentina, on April 7-11, 2003. The conference aims at bringing together science educators and national teams from over one hundred countries to share good practice, to discuss current issues and to strengthen international co-operation, so that science teaching improves across the world. Lectures will be translated into English, Spanish and Portuguese.

ICME-10, July 2004
The Tenth International Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME-10) will be held in Copenhagen, Denmark, from July 4 to 11, 2004. While ICME-10 will be in accordance with the principles established by the ICME tradition, a distinctive flavour is the fact that it is being organised in close cooperation among the Nordic countries - Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. To emphasise this Nordic flavour, a special Nordic Contact Committee has been formed to support collaboration in the planning process. This Committee is chaired by Prof. Gerd Brandell, Luleå University of Technology, Sweden (Gerd.Brandell@sm.luth.se).
The International Programme Committee of ICME-10, appointed by ICMI, is chaired by Prof. Mogens Niss, Roskilde University, Denmark (mn@mmf.ruc.dk). The members of the IPC are listed in this issue of the ICMI Bulletin.
The Local Organising Committee of ICME-10, chaired by Prof. Morten Blomhøj of Roskilde University, Denmark (morten@mmf.ruc.dk), aims at making ICME-10 a truly wide-spanning gathering for researchers and teachers from all parts of the world. To help endure this, it is intended to keep the registration fee at its customary level and to provide lodging options for all budget levels.
