    The Thirteenth ICMI Study on
    Mathematics Education in Different Traditions

    The Executive Committee of ICMI announces its decision to organize an ICMI Study with the (tentative) title Mathematics Education in Different Traditions: A Comparative Study in Asian and Western Countries. The Study is directed by an International Program Committee (IPC) which is composed as follows:

      Klaus-Dieter Graf (Freie Universität Berlin, Germany), co-chair of the IPC
      Frederick K.S. Leung (the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong), co-chair of the IPC
      Annie Bessot (Université Joseph Fourier, Grenoble, France)
      Alan Bishop (Monash University, Victoria, Australia)
      Fan Liang Huo (National Institute of Education, Singapore)
      Walter Fischer (University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany)
      Lin Fou Lai (National Taiwan Normal University, Taipei, Taiwan)
      Kyung-Mee Park (Korea Institute of Curriculum and Evaluation, Seoul, Korea)
      Katsuhiko Shimizu (National Institute of Educational Research, Tokyo, Japan)
      Jim Stigler (University of California at Los Angeles, USA)
      Margaret Wu (Australian Council for Educational Research, Victoria, Australia)
      Zhang Dianzhou (East China Normal University, Shanghai, China)
      Bernard Hodgson (Université Laval, Québec, Canada), ex officio, representing the ICMI EC.


    Francis Lopez-Real, the University of Hong Kong, will assume the role of Chair of the Local Organizing Committee.

    The first task of the IPC is to produce a so-called Discussion Document for world-wide circulation. This Discussion Document will be published in a forthcoming issue of this Bulletin, and elsewhere. The next task is to organize an international Study Conference, expected to take place in 2002 in Hong Kong.
