The Brazilian National Congress officially declared 2017 – 2018 the
Biennium of Mathematics (link in Portuguese).
With this, our legislators wished to seize the momentum generated by our hosting of: the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)
in 2017 and the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in 2018.
A highlight of the Biennium was Festival da Matemática
(Mathematics Festival - link in Portuguese). The Festival was held in Rio de Janeiro in April/2017, with affiliated events throughout the country.
Another important event was a special, Math-centered edition of the
National Week of Science and Technology (link in Portuguese).
The Biennium has generated great interest in the Brazilian press and in society at large. We wish to carry this enthusiasm forward
and sow the seeds for a more mathematical future for Brazil. The website
https://www.bieniodamatematica.org.br/
(in Portuguese) contains updated information on current and future Biennium activities.
The Biennium’s activities are a culmination of long-term efforts by our research community. Some of our best-known names have been involved
with attempts to increase awareness and improve mathematical education in Brazil.
Over the last 10+ years, we have been engaged in projects of a larger scale. Here are a few examples:

Geometry and Imagination is an exhibition that has as it’s purpose to offer a space of aesthetic experimentation and of mathematical patterns in nature and culture. Through an interaction with the pieces of the exhibition area, the visitor will be able to admire one of math’s main characteristics: being able to study relationships between all types of situations and establishing an unity in diversity. As Jules Henri Poincaré very well pointed out, this is “the art of giving the same name to different things”.
The exhibition’s name comes from the homonymous book written by David Hilbert and Stephan Cohn-Vossen. Just like the book, the exhibition seeks to “contribute to a fair apreciation of math by a larger range of people and not only specialists”, through an intuitive and visual way. We hope that, with this exhibition, the vistor will see the artistic beauty in math and the mathematical beauty in art.
Plus is an online magazine which aims to introduce readers to the beauty and the practical applications of mathematics. A lot of people don't have a very clear idea what "real" maths consists of, and often they don't realise how many things they take for granted only work because of a generous helping of it. Apparently, some people even have the idea that it's boring! Weird. Anyway, we hope that even if you're such a person now, you won't be after looking through one or two issues of Plus, and that you'll come back and read future issues as they come out.
The series on Mathematics aired between November 13 and 17, 2017 by “Jornal Nacional” (TV Globo) received the Hors-Concours award from the IMPA-SBM Journalism Award 2018. The award winning TV Globo team was integrated by Pedro Bassan, Lizzie Nassar, Rogério Lima, Eduardo Seabra, Tatiana Neves, Zeca Esperança and Renato Portronieri. The series had the special participation of the director general of IMPA, Marcelo Viana, also ICM2018 Chair. Check out the episodes! (in portuguese)
