It is my great pleasure to welcome you all to the first edition of the Newsletter of the International Congress of Mathematicians ICM 2018 2018, containing some important information on the organization of the event!

The dates and venue of the Congress have now been settled: ICM 2018 will take place on August 1st - 9th, 2018, at the Riocentro Convention Center in Barra da Tijuca.

Barra da Tijuca is the liveliest and fastest growing neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro´s Zona Oeste. In recent years, it has become a major destination for leisure and entertainment in the city. Besides woods, lakes, forests and a long beach, Barra da Tijuca boasts hundreds of bars, restaurants, and theaters. Especially noteworthy is Cidade das Artes, a new venue for dance and music.

Also in Barra is Riocentro, the ICM 2018 venue, which is 35 kilometers away from downtown Rio de Janeiro, and 29 kilometers away from Copacabana. Riocentro is our best known convention center, has been in operation for nearly 40 years, and is one of the biggest in Brazil and in Latin America. It has hosted, for example, the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), in 2012, as well as countless international scientific meetings.

Recently remodeled, Riocentro is also very well located. The area around it is one of the hubs for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, and it boasts over 10 thousand hotel rooms (in a 18 kilometer radio) and brand-new transportation infrastructure. One way to get there is via TransCarioca, the newly built BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) line connecting Barra da Tijuca to the Antônio Carlos Jobim international airport.

We encourage all of you to look for more information about Barra da Tijuca and Riocentro on the Web. Meanwhile, take a look at the articles in our news section of the website. Highlights include a brief report on mathematical research in Brazil and an interview with renowned Brazilian geometer Manfredo do Carmo.

See you in Rio!
