The International Congress, the most important in the world in Mathematics, has been held every four years since 1897, and this will be the first time it has been held in Spain.

The Spanish Mathematics Committee, which includes all the Spanish Mathematical Societies and is the official Spanish representative at the IMU, put forward the Spanish bid.

ICMs are important for various reasons:

They convene about 5000 mathematicians from all over the world;
It is at this event when the Fields Medals are awarded, the Nobel Prize in Mathematics;
The ICM is a great Forum, in which the most relevant state of I + D on Mathematics is double checked;
They provide a platform for between 40 or 50 satellite lectures, making Spain a focul point both leading up to, during and after the ICM2006 itself.
